Phoned Joe and Laura this morning to wish Joe a Happy Birthday. We left Newport around 10 and stopped a gas station to fill up. Apparently it is Oregon law that an attendant much fill the tank. Don't know why but perhaps it is to prevent accidental spills. Funny though, most of the states we traveled through required the captain to fill his boat. The dock attendant couldn't do it.

It started out rainy this mornign again but cleared up around one. This section of the coast is even more rugged than yesterday. There are a lot of houses built on side of the cliffs and every once in a while a sign pops up saying that a certain portion of the road close to the water is a Tsunami zone. The other thing we noticed as we drove along was the winds off the Pacific - quite high. Apparently, they have had winds up to 120 miles per hour coming off the Pacific - that's hurricane force and they do have evacuation roads posted much the same as in Florida and the East Coast.

We almost made California but stopped in Gold Beach about 50 miles from the border. Stayed in a nice hotel right on the water. Have a balcony overlooking the beach and the ocean, much the same as the place we have rented in Florida this coming February. Beautiful sunset!
